Thursday, September 10, 2009 The Justice and Public Safety Cabinet today announced the award of 81 federal and state grants totaling nearly $5 million to police departments, sheriff’s departments and other criminal justice agencies across the Commonwealth. The grant money will help police officers and criminal justice professionals protect citizens against drunken driving, drugs and other crimes. All grant awards run July 1, 2009, to June 30, 2010.

Compared to the surrounding states, Kentucky reported fewer hate crimes than Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee, Ohio, and Virginia, but more hate crimes than Indiana and West Virginia.

The report is believed to be the first time that the impact of terrorism on the lives of Kentucky residents has been examined.

Wednesday, June 04, 2008 In the four years he's been an officer with the Department of Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement, Anthony Bersaglia has built a reputation among his colleagues for his determination and dedication to the job.
A former deputy sheriff and conservation officer, he generates an activity level that, according to his commanders, no one else can reach, was selected to be a firearms instructor within his first year with the department, and is a double recipient of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Award for Officer, which recognizes an officer for his or her dedication to commercial vehicle safety.
“He is known as a man who sincerely reaches out to help those in need and help protect those who have entrusted their safety with him,” said Capt. Phillip Frazier, who coordinated the awards program. “He makes himself available to other officers and citizens, even when he is not on duty.”
In honor of those achievements, KVE presented Bersaglia the 2007 Jason Cammack Officer of the Year Award, bestowing on him KVE's highest award, which recognizes “what a police officer should represent in his professional and personal life.”

The 2006 Office of the State Medical Examiner’s Annual Report indicates 197 deaths related to the misuse of the prescription drug methadone. Methadone was the prescription drug that was most frequently detected in the blood of fatal overdose victims.

Tuesday, January 31, 2006 London, KY - A traffic stop at a Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement (KVE) weigh station has led to the largest marijuana seizure in the department’s history. On Monday, January 30, 2006, at approximately 12:00 (EST), KVE Officer Randall A. Honeycutt made a traffic stop on a tractor trailer for a safety inspection. After talking with the driver, it was determined that further inspection was warranted. The ODCP was allocated $1,000,000 to help establish programs, financial policy and administrative guidance for full-service local correctional/detention facilities, which will provide programs for inmates, parolees, shock probationers and Halfway Back participants. ODCP awarded $500,000 at the beginning of the fiscal year to nine jails and now has a balance of $500,000 to award by the end of 2005.
