Frankfort, KY – Kentucky Department of Corrections Commissioner John D. Rees today announced that Deputy Commissioner James Schomig has earned his Certified Corrections Executive (CCE) designation from the American Correctional Association.

Prior to certification, applicants qualify on the basis of their experience and accomplishments in the field of corrections. Then they must successfully complete a comprehensive examination that tests their knowledge as a corrections executive. The CCE designation is an indication of demonstrated professionalism involving such activities as supervising human resources, demonstrating leadership skills, managing change and general knowledge concerning the field of corrections.

 “This is a tremendous accomplishment and a significant honor for Jim and this Department,” said Rees. “Correctional certification is the best process in which an employee in the field of corrections can validate his or her knowledge, skill and understanding of the system. Having the benefit of certification, the knowledge of correctional and modern management techniques, is a tremendous asset especially for one of my top-level administrators. It also provides a strong feeling of self confidence in ones ability to do the job, unlike anything else offered in the field.”

In addition to Schomig, three other Kentuckians hold this national certification: Rees, Kentucky State Reformatory Warden Larry Chandler, and Blackburn Correctional Complex Warden Joe Rion.

Schomig, a 30-year veteran of the corrections profession, has been DOC Deputy Commissioner since March 2005. In this role he is in charge of all aspects of operation and administration for Kentucky’s 13 state and 3 private prisons.
