How to Obtain Credit for Reciprocity
Kentucky accepts reciprocity for peace officers, telecommunicators, court security officers, federal police officers and military police officers on a case-by-case basis. To apply:
Submit the application and documentation to the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council for review. You will receive a response within 5-7 business days after all supporting documentation has been received. Applications may be submitted via the following:

503 KAR 1:140 Section 10 states the requirement for out-of-state reciprocity for peace officers, telecommunicators, federal peace officers and military police officers for the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council.
If Approved for Reciprocity
Peace Officers
If approved for reciprocity to Kentucky, you are exempt from completing a Kentucky Law Enforcement Basic Training Course. As a reciprocity applicant, you must complete the following with your potential Kentucky agency prior to hiring:
Phase I Testing
Phase II Testing
Additional Standards Required Before Hiring (Hiring Process)
Is a citizen of the United States
Is at least twenty-one (21) years of age
Is a high school graduate or has successfully completed a General Education Development (G.E.D.) examination
Possesses a valid license to operate a motor vehicle
Has been fingerprinted for a criminal background check
Has not been convicted of a Felony; a Misdemeanor under KRS 510.120, 510.130 or 510.140, a second or subsequent offense under KRS 510.148; or a Criminal Attempt, Conspiracy, Facilitation, or Solicitation to commit any degree of Rape, Sodomy, Sxual Abuse, or sexual Misconduct; or have had any offense listed under this Subsection expunged.
Is not prohibited by federal or state law from possessing a firearm
Has been interviewed
Has undergone a background investigation
Has not received a dishonorable discharge, bad conduct discharge, or general discharge under other than honorable conditions, if having served in the armed forces
Has received and read the Kentucky Law Enforcement Officer’s code of Ethics
Has passed a medical exam
Has not had certification as a peace officer revoked in another state
KRS 15.400 Section 2 states the requirement for out-of-state reciprocity applicants for peace officer positions in Kentucky not employed as a Kentucky peace officer after December 1, 1998 to complete all minimum pre-employment standards prior to hiring (KRS 15.382).
