Kentucky State Police Telecoommunication Academy

The Kentucky State Police Telecommunications Academy began providing basic telecommunications training, as required by Kentucky Revised Statutes, for agency personnel in 2012 and since then has provided two academy sessions each year. Each telecommunications academy session is five weeks in length (196 hours) and provides a combination of classroom work supplemented with practical exercises that require students to use the information from classroom studies in order to process simulated calls for service. Students are provided with training specific to law enforcement, fire and medical dispatch services. The simulated situations require new agency telecommunicators to develop and improve on the skills that will be necessary to effectively provide needed services requested of the communications center at the particular Post where they are assigned.

In addition to the mandated basic telecommunications training, the Telecommunications Academy also provides mandated in-service telecommunications training each year. The in-service training has been expanded to include telecommunicators from other Kentucky agencies who wish to attend the State Police offered in-service training topics.

The structure and content of basic and in-service training developed and offered by the Kentucky State Police Telecommunications Academy has generated interest from dispatch centers across the state as well as agencies from other states.
